How to eat like a vegan in Plano

Recently, I’ve had friends come to me curious about veganism. Simply put, it’s a lifestyle where individuals don’t consume or use any animal products. I’ve been vegan for more than six years and vegetarian for six years prior to that. In my earlier days, dining out was nearly impossible, but Plano now has options that will heartily satisfy even the biggest carnivore’s appetite. Whether you’re a strict vegan or simply want to eat healthier, allow me to share the best Plano offers in meat-free cuisine.

Asian Delights
This is my favorite hidden gem. The owners previously ran Sykamore Vegan House, a Dallas staple among the vegetarian crowd. Asian Delights specializes in Malaysian, Singaporian and Thai cuisine and the restaurant is entirely vegan. My favorites are the Roti Canai and Laksa Curry Soup.

Lyfe Kitchen
Lyfe Kitchen is a fast-casual concept that supports local sourcing and sustainable foods. It has delicious meals I’d recommend if you’re newly transitioning or simply looking to cut back on meat and dairy intake. My favorites are the Quinoa Crunch Wrap and veganized Chicken, Mushroom and Spinach Penne. I can’t leave without getting a Lyfe water!

Pho Apple
A Vietnamese restaurant with a separate vegetarian/vegan menu? Yes! Pho is my favorite and having a spot close to home with so many options is always good. Other delicious dishes from the vegetarian menu are the Stir Fried Tofu and Vegetable Vermicelli.

Cedars Mediterranean
Vegan/vegetarian buffet, need I say more? I love Cedars’ array of salads, dips, and veggies. I typically choose my favorites on the all-you-can-eat buffet.

Modern Market
Sometimes you just want a good Tofu Scramble. It’s offered with pepperjack cheese, but omit that and you’re in business. Other favorites include Sesame Tofu Homestyle Plate and Superfood Salad. Modmarket’s concept is making healthy, tasty and affordable food easily available.

Malgudi Garden
Malgudi Garden uses a holistic approach in preparing food and is strictly vegan and vegetarian. It offers a weekend breakfast buffet, daily lunch buffet and regular menu dinner hours. Vegan items are clearly marked and the lunch buffet has many options. High-Tea specials are also offered.

Seasons 52
Seasons 52 is the perfect contemporary spot to have a date night. It offers a seasonally changing menu in an upscale setting and has ample vegan options. My favorites are the Hummus Duo with plain lavosh and the Vegetarian Tacos sans feta cheese.

Twisted Root Burger Co.
Being vegan doesn’t mean missing out on a big, juicy burger. Twisted Root offers a house-made vegan patty of black beans, ground chickpeas, flax seed, brown rice and quinoa. Load your burger up how you like it and pair with sweet potato chips; you’ve got yourself a mighty fine meal.

Mi Dia From Scratch
Mi Dia serves traditional Mexican and Santa Fe flavors with modern Tex-Mex. Vegans and vegetarians appreciate its separate menu, which takes the guesswork out of what to order when you’re craving Tex-Mex. I recommend Veggie Fajitas with corn tortillas sans sour cream and cheese.

Mango Thai
Mango Thai aims to mix traditional Thai cuisine with more contemporary recipes using fresh ingredients. The ambiance is very cozy and there is a seemingly endless array of vegan options. My favorites are Pad Woon Sen and Green Veggie Stir Fry.

Thanks a million. It is difficult to find places that serve vegan. If you like Indian cuisine, try Saravana Bhavan. Pricey but great authentic Indian (especially south Indian) food.
