Flags of Honor

Plano East Rotary Club’s second annual Veteran’s Day Flags of Honor tribute will be on display Nov. 9-11. For three days, Plano citizens are invited to honor family members, friends and neighbors who faithfully served our country.

The Flags of Honor tribute is a display of one thousand American flags placed in Oak Point Park in East Plano. Anyone may sponsor an individual flag for $50 to honor a loved one who served. The sponsored flags are tagged with information regarding the honored individual.

Each day of Veteran’s Day weekend will feature local speakers and patriotic music during a one-hour program beginning at 4:30 p.m.  On Nov. 9, there will be a program to honor all veterans. Nov. 10 is First Responders Day, followed by the Veteran’s Day Celebration Nov. 11.

Plano East Rotary Club member Sally Phillips recalled that last year’s inaugural display was exceptionally emotional. While at one ceremony, Sally spoke with several veterans who expressed to her their rush of emotions upon seeing the field of flags.

Sally recalled, “[One gentleman] was stunned as memories long buried flooded back into his mind. He was proud to say he served with so many, and proud of those who continue to serve. He took joy in the display of so many commemorating their service.”
