Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere announced plans on Sept. 4 for the second annual Plano Families First Fall Fair to be held this year on Sept. 28 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Plano Event Center. The event was created in 2018 in an effort to alleviate hardships for thousands of Plano families.
Chock-full of community, educational and health resources, the fair is free and open to families who reside in Plano or attend Plano schools. Plano ISD is a key partner in the event.
“We reached over 5,000 people in our inaugural Plano Families First Fall Fair last year,” said Mayor LaRosiliere. “While Plano is a prosperous city, we have many lives who can benefit from the generosity of our community. Through this fair, it is our mission to give every family access and opportunity to thrive in Plano.”
Families can enjoy a one-stop shop with free healthcare services and takeaways, including flu shots offered by Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Plano (offered on a first-come, first-served basis); health and vision screenings provided by Walmart; and asthma screenings and GoNoodle activities plus information on asthma management and sports medicine provided by Children’s Health and Andrews Institute. Collin County School of Dental Hygiene will offer dental screenings (for everyone) and fluoride varnishes (for children only). Smiles Change Lives will conduct orthodontic screenings and offer orthodontia at dramatically reduced fees to families who qualify. And thanks to Liberty Mutual and BSBD Insurance, the first 500 kids to arrive at the fair will receive free school supplies packets.
For those seeking a job or wanting to sharpen their skills, the Plano Chamber of Commerce will host a Job Fair with dozens of employers on hand who are ready to offer hundreds of full-time, part-time and seasonal positions. Capital One and Collin College will host a Career Corner where job seekers will receive advice on how to create a resume and develop a LinkedIn profile, participate in mock interviews and obtain a free LinkedIn photo taken by a professional photographer.
United Healthcare will offer soccer activities and an edible nutrition craft. Plano Parks & Recreation will give away free rec center memberships, lead soccer skills camps and demonstrate dance and martial arts. The Plano Public Library will host puppet shows and give away free books to children. The Boeing Company will encourage STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning by teaching kids to make and launch stomp rockets.
Other entertainment highlights include a free Pumpkin Patch Photo Booth provided by the Junior League of Collin County along with puppet shows, kids craft areas and face painting. Entertainment will be provided by the popular children’s music group, The Que Pastas; the comical Bubble Lady who combines science and silliness; and the Dallas Mavericks ManiAACs along with mascots Mavs Man and Champ.
Also, every family will walk away with a free jar of peanut butter collected during the Collin County Peanut Butter Drive, led by Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and the Plano City Council in partnership with the North Texas Food Bank.
