Ever since she was a little girl, ML Dubay made toffee with her family using their secret family recipe. Due to popular demand from friends, ML officially turned her toffee into a thriving business by creating Toffee Treats and Chocolate Sweets in 2009.
What gave you the idea to start your business?
Every year my friends would tell me how much they loved my toffee, caramels and jalapeño bacon, and that I should start my own business selling homemade candy and confections. I had been in the high-tech corporate world since the early ‘90s and was very happy there, until 2008 when my gut started telling me it was time to do something different.
What edible goodies do you offer?
Toffee Treats and Chocolate Sweets sells a variety of toffees including dark, milk and white chocolate with Texas pecans or California almonds. In addition, we make sea salt caramels dipped in dark chocolate with sea salt sprinkled on top, as well as our famously popular jalapeño bacon with dark chocolate drizzled over it.
Certain times of the year, other flavored toffee selections are also offered, including white chocolate with dried cranberries or crushed peppermint with sweet pecans on top.
What makes your products different than other sweets?
While the buttery, chocolatey goodness of my milk and dark chocolate almond toffee is quite appealing, people have also gone crazy over my Hatch green chile toffee. Since then, I have come out with other unique confections, among them, jalapeño bacon drizzled with chocolate.
Perhaps some of the most notable and consistent compliments I receive are about the flavor, the quality and the fact that the toffee doesn’t stick to their teeth!
What is your favorite part about owning a sweets business?
The opportunity to see customers’ faces when they taste our toffee for the first time. It is also a treat to see repeat customers for more than 10 years that keep coming back.
What are your future goals for the business?
At some point it would be so cool to see Toffee Treats and Chocolate Sweets on the “How It’s Made” TV show. Or to have Food Network do a special on how we first started our business with one employee, and now it’s grown to a much larger business with hundreds of employees helping us make award winning toffee treats and chocolate sweets.
