“Sweet Charity” presented by Art Centre Theatre
Nominated for 9 TONY awards, this fabulous musical (inspired by Fellini’s “Nights of Cabiria”) was first on Broadway in 1966 under the direction of the legendary Bob Fosse, and has stood the test of time.
Charity Hope Valentine, a young taxi dancer at the Fandango Ballroom in NYC, has a big heart for Charlie, whom she met in Central Park. Charlie’s not so big hearted, but she tries to convince herself he’s the one. By chance, she meets the film star Vittorio Vidal (who was publicly dumped by his beautiful mistress, Ursula), and the plot thickens. Memorable tunes (“Big Spender”, “If My Friends Could See Me Now”, “Sweet Charity”) mark this as one of the great, lively musicals, leaving audiences living “hopefully … ever after.”
