Ian Lovejoy was watching the news a few months ago when he heard a story that piqued his interest: A treasure had been found in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Apparently a man buried a million dollars in the mountains 10 years prior, and finally someone found it.

“That sparked this notion, ‘Hey, there might be a way to do that in a more controlled, finite way,’” shared Ian, who lives in Manassas, Virginia, and would go on to start Treasure Quest Adventures.

Treasure Quest Adventures is a company that specializes in professionally curated, outdoor treasure hunts. Every hunt leads to a cash prize, and consists of an online map that leads its participants to clues, puzzles and riddles that they must solve. A limited number of tickets are sold for each quest, so you must book your spot to play in advance. The cash prize ranges from $1,000 to $5,000.

“In the age of COVID, people are looking for a reason to get out and explore in a new way,” Ian said. “We have set up the scavenger hunts so that they take you on a journey through your community.”

Treasure Quest started in Virginia, but is expanding to Dallas, Miami and Phoenix. The team chose these next locations because they are chasing good winter weather, according to Ian.

“We are launching in Dallas on December 5, then Fort Worth on January 9, then Collin County on January 30,” Ian said.
