Applications for the Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship Program are officially open now through March 1. The program is sponsored by Capital One and connects current Plano ISD sophomore and junior students with paid job opportunities from corporations and nonprofits in the area.

Running eight weeks from June 7 through July 30, the program offers both remote and on-site internship placements. Students will earn at least $10 an hour and work 20 to 40 hours a week.

Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere has run this program for eight years and has said that each student reaps invaluable benefits from their summer experience in the professional world. Last summer, though most internships were virtual, students still experienced benefits like observing business operations, networking and learning about a potential career path.

This year, internships will be a mix of in-person and virtual work. Each business and nonprofit is able to offer a safe work experience for their interns with strict safety protocols in place.

To apply, students should complete the online application which includes two short essays. To qualify, students must be a sophomore or junior at a Plano ISD high school, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and solid attendance record, be 16 years old by June 7, be eligible to work in the United States and be able to work the entire eight weeks of the internship from June 7 through July 30. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to avoid the waitlist.

To be eligible for the internship, students must be able to attend the Intern Prep virtual event on Saturday, March 20. This event will focus on resume development, interviewing, business communication, professional dress and goal planning. Attendance at this event will ensure eligibility for the Job Fair on Thursday, April 22. Selected students will be offered a job in May.

The internship will include an Intern Enrichment and Orientation on June 2 and 3 as well as a Community Service Day this summer. The program will culminate with a luncheon on Monday, July 26 at Hilton Granite Park.

In addition to Capital One, Plano ISD and JP Morgan Chase are also sponsoring the program, as well as Atmos Energy, Bank of America, Boeing, City of Plano, Dallas Mavericks, FedEx Office, Granite Properties, Liberty Mutual, NTT DATA Services and Oncor.

Businesses or nonprofits interested in hiring a summer intern through this program can sign up anytime through April 15 by emailing vicki@vwaitgroup.com.
