The Specialty Donut Shop Introduces its Own Version of the Cronut

A little over a week ago, WOW! Donuts and Drips quietly reopened its Plano donut shop to the public after a long closure due to the ongoing pandemic. WOW! originally opened in December 2017, featuring specialty donuts, great coffee and a beautiful interior. During the closure, its owners were busy perfecting their version of the cronut, a croissant-donut hybrid, which has been added to the menu carrying the name “ooh-la-la.”

“We have mastered the proper way to make cronuts, based off the way pastry chefs in New York City make them,” shared chief operating officer of WOW! David Sim. “Cronuts take three days to make. We put a lot of work into them. We had to keep ourselves busy somehow during quarantine, so this is what we focused on.”

WOW! is getting back into the swing of things, with operating hours from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, and hopes to extend hours until 10 p.m. in the near future. If you’d like to get your hands on an “ooh-la-la,” though, you’ll want to arrive at the shop before 8 a.m. as the shop has been running out within the first hour every day. Owners plan to ramp up the amount of cronuts they make daily, but it will still be a limited supply due to the length of time it takes to create them.

Another change upon reopening is that WOW! has trimmed down its menu, leaving the best sellers. Previously there were three tiers of donuts, each with a different price point. Now all donuts are $2.95, and “ooh-la-las” range from $5.25 to $5.95, depending on flavor.

As always, all donuts are made in-house using clean ingredients and excluding preservatives and artificial flavorings. The current “ooh-la-la” flavor is tiramisu, and WOW! intends to change the flavor monthly, in tune with the seasons. Expect fall flavors soon.

As a precaution against the spread of COVID-19, WOW! has shields on the counters and hand sanitizing stations at the entrance. The dining room is shut down, so only to-go orders are available right now.

“We’ve been blessed in our reopening. People have told us they’d been driving by looking for our open sign to be lit up, and as soon as it was, they have been streaming back in,” David said. “Everyone seems to be doing their part here in Plano [to prevent the spread of COVID-19]. We haven’t had to ask anyone to put their mask back on.”

WOW! Donuts and Drips will celebrate a grand reopening on Sept. 5, with half off all coffee, tea and espresso drinks on the menu, and other special offers in the coming weeks.
