The public is invited to the 2nd Annual Collin County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Appreciation Day Service on Monday, Jan. 21, the official Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The service will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church in Allen.
Dr. John McCaa, WFAA News co-anchor, is Master of Ceremonies for the second year. 2019 co-chairs are Rev. Todd Harris, First United Methodist Church, Allen; Pastor Timothy Jones, Rockbridge Church, Allen; Dr. Wayne Stafford, Sr., Fellowship Christian Center Church, Plano.
The mission of the Appreciation Day Service is to honor Dr. King’s legacy and continue the values he represented of love, equality and justice. The service is a collaboration of civic organizations, churches, community leaders and academic institutions. It is organized and managed by volunteers and funded through donations.
The program will include musical selections performed by choirs from several area churches and the MLK Day Community Choir, a dance presentation by Fellowship Christian Center Plano Ensemble, proclamations from mayors of the cities of Allen, Frisco, McKinney, and Plano, and a Collin County Judge.
Winners of the Collin County Student Art Contest will be recognized, and their art work will be on display. The 2019 Collin County MLK Drum Major Awards will also be recognized. The recipients are Baine Brooks, Colin Kimball and Dr. Rev. Charles Reese, Sr. The Drum Major award was established by Dr. King to recognize individuals who have dedicated much of their lives to improving the human condition.
