Event Details

For more than 30 years, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) – a science-led global healthcare company – has brought fun and engaging STEM education to underserved elementary school students with the goal of sparking a lifelong love of science and interest in STEM careers. GSK partners with the Franklin Institute and the University of North Carolina to bring GSK Science in the Summer™ to 27 locations across the country, helping more than 250,000 children in Title I schools with free, innovative summer science instruction.

For the past five years, Frisco’s Sci-Tech Discovery Center has been a proud partner in the Science in the Summer™ program. On Aug. 17, the museum will host an end-of-summer celebration of the program. Students have been learning about “the science of me” this summer, so the event will focus on hands-on demonstrations and activities that explore hearts, lungs, blood and the brain.

Special activities will include:

·         A sheep’s heart dissection
·         Extraction of DNA from a strawberry
·         Exciting and explosive WOW shows
·         Other activities that explore the amazing human body.

“We’re proud to celebrate Science in the Summer™ with our partner, GSK,” says Sci-Tech Discovery Center Executive Director Janet Madrazo. “Helping underserved kids learn about STEM and STEM careers is among our chief priorities and this event is an acknowledgement of both the educational effort and the kids themselves.”

There are still opportunities to have Sci-Tech Discovery Center educators bring GSK Science in the Summer™ to classrooms in North Texas. Students entering second through fifth grades can participate over 1, 2 or 4 days as they complete the 4-hour course all about “The Science of Me.” The program runs through the end of August. Educators can call 972-546-3050 x107 to book.
