Black History film festivals, puppet shows, engineering experiments, and drawing workshops… for free?
You’ll fall in love with Plano Public Library (PPL) this February. From preschool to professional, PPL has something for everyone. Not interested in reading? No biggie – we’re #morethanbooks! See what’s happening this month at the five public libraries near you.
1. Math-y Time
(ages 3-6, with parent/caregiver)
This special storytime features easy math concepts for preschoolers using books and hands-on math activities. Children will learn numbers and counting, make fractions with pizza, explore shapes and more at this weekly mini-series happening at Davis Library on Wednesdays, Feb. 7-28 at 10 a.m.
2. Code Club
(ages 5-11, ticketed event)
At this four-week club, kids in grades K-5 will learn the foundations of computer science and coding with engaging activities and games from Code.org. Code Club meets weekly at Haggard Library on Wednesdays, Feb. 7-28 after school at 4 p.m. Space is limited and tickets will be distributed beginning 30 minutes before the club begins. Can’t make it this February? Schimelpfenig Library will host Code Club April 4-25.
3. Plano Reads with Collin College: Book Discussion
(ages 18+)
Plano Public Library is a partner with Collin College for this year’s Book in Common featuring Brando Skyhorse’s “Take This Man: A Memoir.” Collin College English faculty Betty Bettachi is facilitating a book discussion at Schimelpfenig Library on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at their Second Tuesday Book Club. 4. Wonder Café: Catching Some Rays
(ages 0-100)
Keep the wonder alive at our monthly Wonder Café! On Saturday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. at Harrington Library, find out what you can do with sunshine with Larry Howe of Plano Solar Advocates. Learn about solar energy and experiment using solar cars from Plano Environmental Education Center.
5. Painting Party: Watercolor
(ages 18+)
Learn the art of watercoloring at our Painting Party, a monthly painting series exploring different painting styles and techniques. At Schimelpfenig Library on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. artists (that’s you!) will make bookmarks using watercolors and see how elements like alcohol, salt and crayons change the outcome. Painting Party is part of PPL’s Art Spark grant series, funded by Institute of Museum and Library Services and Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
