Though the county fell short of the fundraising numbers raised by Denton and Tarrant counties, Plano council members raised hundreds.

The 2024 Mayoral Red Kettle Challenge from The Salvation Army’s results are in and Plano’s participating members raised over $1,745.

The Salvation Army of North Texas hosted the challenge at the beginning of the holiday season, encouraging city officials to get involved in raising money for programs across the region that aid neighbors facing poverty, addiction and homelessness. According to a news release, around 40 mayors and city councilmembers across Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties participated in the competition.

Though Collin County came no where close to winning, our City Council had more participants in the challenge than any other city, including Rick Smith, Rick Horne, Kayci Prince, Shelby Williams and Anthony Ricciardelli.

“We are so grateful to the generous elected officials that partner with us each year during the Mayoral Challenge,” said Major Paul McFarland, North Texas Area Commander for The Salvation Army. “The funds raised allow us to continue providing essential services and support to more than 100,000 individuals in North Texas throughout the year, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without sustained community support.”

Tarrant County officials raised a total of $128,343.91 across 13 mayors, Denton County raised $15,682.25 across seven mayors, Dallas County raised $2,826.29 across five mayors and one council member and Collin County raised $6,327.06 across six mayors and five council members.

Funds raised through the program support initiatives providing shelter, feeding, youth programs, addiction-recovery programs, inclement weather and disaster assistance.
