On September 11, the country will recognize the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and Hunger Action month.
This year will be the sixth year that North Texas Meal Pack for 9/11 Day has brought together volunteers to pack meals on the National Day of Service and Remembrance. This is one of 21 volunteer service projects organized by nonprofit 9/11 Day.
The nonprofit was started by two friends after one’s younger brother was killed while responding at the World Trade Center as a volunteer firefighter with the mission to turn the anniversary of 9/11 into “a day of doing good.”
The program is sponsored nationally by AmeriCorps, Delta Air Lines and Reliance, Inc., along with other corporations for different volunteer events around the country. North Texas’ program is sponsored by Citi, along with SRS Raise the Roof Foundation, UnitedHealth Group, Atmos Energy, Ruiz Foods, Tyler Technologies, and AmeriHome.
Employees of sponsoring corporations and as many as 30,000 individuals nationally are expected to volunteer, assembling more than 8.5 million meals for food insecure Americans. All meals put together by the North Texas program will be donated to North Texas Food Bank for distribution to individuals and families in need.
The project will be held at Curtis Culwell Center at 4999 Naaman Forest Blvd in Garland. Though volunteer space is extremely limited, 9/11 Day encourages Americans to volunteer, donate to charities and perform other good deeds and acts of kindness and share them to social media with the hashtag #IWillFor911Day or #911Day.
