Plano ISD opens applications for first TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy partnership in nation for incoming juniors

Plano ISD applications are open for incoming juniors at a new academy partnering with TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy.

Plano ISD approved a one-of-a-kind partnership with TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy to provide a cosmetology program for high school juniors and seniors. The program will select students based on a lottery to attend the academy starting in the fall of their junior year.

Students who complete the program will be allowed to take their state cosmetology licensing exam, providing them with a gateway to being a licensed cosmetologist after graduation.

“We are proud to offer this one-of-a-kind opportunity to our students,” said Plano ISD Superintendent Dr. Theresa Williams. “This unique partnership will provide students with an additional pathway to college and career readiness—whether they are preparing for a career right out of high school or seeking a way to earn an income while attending college.”

Plano ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the partnership during their regular meeting on Tuesday, January 10.

“Throughout the fall semester, Plano ISD met with TONI&GUY leadership to develop a partnership for juniors and seniors to attend their Plano Academy, learn the knowledge and skills required and begin their career,” said Plano ISD Career & Technical Education Director Karen Buechman. “Through learning experiences in innovative and rigorous programs like the one with TONI&GUY, our students will have access to industry professionals and experiences to become leaders in a global workforce.”

The program’s tuition will be paid for by Plano ISD, but students will be required to purchase their own professional cosmetology kit through TONI&GUY for the program that includes all required technical kit items, media kit items, digital education materials and textbooks. The kit costs approximately $1,750 plus tax, according to Plano ISD.

The 2023-2024 Selection Form is now open at www.pisd.edu/tgselection for interested sophomores and must be submitted by 9:00 p.m. on February 10, 2023. Thirty students will be selected to clock 1,000 hours of theory, technical instruction and practical operations.
