In October of 1984, more than 25,000 Collin County residents signed a petition to establish a community college. Classes started at area high schools the next year, and by January 1986, the Collin College McKinney campus had opened and the first commencement would soon be held. Forty years since its founding, over 60,000 students have walked across that stage across over 200 degree and certificate programs.
To celebrate the anniversary, the college is hosting a music festival and campus carnival. Both will be open to the public and free to attend.
The “Where It All Began” Music Festival will take place at the McKinney campus’ library quad from 1 to 7 p.m. on April 5, featuring six musical acts, food trucks, inflatables, lawn games and giveaways. Musical guests include Maya Piata, Remy Reilly, Cash Byers Band and Blurry Paige.
The Celina campus will take part in the celebration in conjunction with its annual Celina Campus Carnival from 4 to 7 p.m. on April 9 with games, rides, free food and drinks and prizes.
“From our first campus in McKinney to our newest campus in Celina, Collin College has grown along with the communities and the people of Collin County,” said Neil Matkin, Collin College district president. “We are glad that you will be able to celebrate this milestone with us at these two great public events. Come out and enjoy the fun.”
