After months of construction, Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center will reopen on Dec. 4 with a ribbon cutting.

Plano’s busiest recreation center is ready for its next chapter. After months of construction and years of planning, the Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center will officially reopen to the public on Thursday, Dec. 4, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6 p.m. at 5801 W. Parker Road. Attendees can tour and use the facility immediately after the ceremony, with full operations resuming at 5 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5.

The renovation, funded by the 2021 voter-approved bond package, marks the most significant update to the center since it opened in 2007. The City of Plano partnered with LPA Design Studios for architecture and planning, and Lee Lewis Construction led the construction effort.

With more than 400,000 visits each year, Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center serves as a cornerstone of community wellness and recreation. The newly completed renovation focuses on modernizing core infrastructure, improving visitor experience, and expanding amenities for families, swimmers, athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

Highlights of the upgrades include:

  • New children’s pool play structure and new pool deck

  • Refreshed locker rooms

  • Main sewer line replacement

  • New HVAC system for improved comfort and energy efficiency

  • Resurfaced indoor track and gym floor, with updated striping to increase pickleball court availability

  • New cardio equipment and an improved cardio room environment

  • Refreshed landscaping and irrigation

  • Facility-wide updates to meet current building and safety codes

The updates aim to extend the life of the 84,000-square-foot facility while keeping pace with evolving recreation trends, a press release stated.

Ahead of reopening, Plano Parks and Recreation is continuing to hire lifeguards, swim instructors, and recreation aides. Interested applicants can learn more and apply at plano.gov/jobs.
