At a June 24 meeting, the Plano city council approved a $13.5 million contract for renovations at the Tom Muehlenbeck center. The guaranteed maximum price contract with Lee Lewis Construction ensures that any surpluses are under Lee Lewis Construction’s liability.

The Tom Muehlenbeck center is one of the city’s most visited recreation centers, with over 500,000 visitors annually.

The contract is a part of a larger $15.9 million renovation project for the recreation center. Renovations include roof repairs, HVAC replacement, locker room facilities and resurfacing of the walking track and recreational gym floor. Apart from improving the non-aquatic facilities, there are intentions to modernize the pool pump and motor in addition to adding shade structures to the pool area. Since the recreation center in Plano opened its doors in 2009, this project will be the biggest renovation.

The recreation center will close in February in order to make room for the renovations. All other city recreation centers, except the High Point Tennis Center, are accessible to users with recreation passes.

City officials anticipate the Tom Muehlenbeck center to reopen to the public in October of 2025.
