Lake Life
(Lake Texoma / 60 minutes north of Plano)
Ever been to Lake Texoma? It’s that large body of water straddling the Texas/Oklahoma border that’s shaped a bit like a dragon. Whether more interested in a quick morning excursion, a day on the water or a weekend vacation, family owned Texoma Destinations can help make the most of one’s time at the lake.
At first mention of lake activities, people think simply fishing or boating, but there is much more to do on the water. Plano resident Beth Hutchinson, a representative for Texoma Destinations, gave a rundown of some activities her office can schedule for guests: romantic sunset dinner cruises, bald eagle sightseeing tours, kayaking, standup paddle boarding, sailing, boat rentals, boating lessons, guided fishing trips, even day-long excursions to private hang-out spots.
With three properties, a marina and variety of activities at the 12th largest lake in the United States and the self-proclaimed “Striper Fishing Capital of the World,” the experts at Texoma Destinations can concoct the perfect itinerary for families, singletons, ladies’ groups, guys trips, business team building excursions and even wedding parties.
Overnight amenities include cabins that accommodate two to 16 guests, primitive tent camping sites and RV spots, and modern “glamping” cabins, for those who don’t really want to leave the comforts of home back at home.
The best part of spending time at the lake is admission into the local subculture that Beth has coined “The University of Texoma.” Made of “students” and “teachers” who believe that life is simpler and a little more fun on the lake, you too can get an education in kicking back, relaxing and spirit renewal.
Texoma Destinations is constantly brainstorming fresh new adventures for guests. In the past they’ve hosted Casino Nights and Murder Mystery Dinner Cruises; they occasionally have live music set up on the beach with a bonfire. One-night stays are available now until April 1 when the regular two-night minimum season begins.
