The Colony just got a little bit cooler. Truck Yard, a sprawling, indoor/outdoor, dog-friendly beer garden, opened its doors in the Grandscape development on Monday, July 15. This is Truck Yard’s third location, with the first residing on Lower Greenville in Dallas and the second in Houston. But this one is the biggest one yet – more than three times the size of the Dallas spot.
Truck Yard has garnered a large following thanks to its live music, relaxed vibe, chilled cocktails and rotating food trucks supplying customers with an array of foodie favorites. Now, it’s bringing all its best attributes up north to suburbanites.
“There’s nothing like this up north,” Assistant General Manager Max Perlstein said about the new location. “And we are just doing everything on a bigger scale.”
Returning Truck Yard enthusiasts can still enjoy offerings from the bar’s in-house cheesesteak stand, Steak Me Home Tonight, which is also found at the Dallas location. Familiar food trucks like Easy Slider and Stick Dog will also drive up and serve up their offerings at The Colony location. But there are plenty of new amenities for locals to check out, including food trucks that don’t often venture south.
“It’s fun getting a mix and match of old and new trucks,” Max said. “You’ll see a lot of the trucks that you see [down] in Dallas, but there will also be a lot of trucks that don’t drive toward Dallas.”
Guests will walk through an elaborate junkyard entrance featuring half-buried cars adorned with lights. After wandering past the decked-out Airstream trailer and enlarged yard games like giant Battleship, guests will feel drawn toward a peculiar art display on the second story. Truck Yard The Colony is home to Barney Smith’s Toilet Seat Art Museum, boasting about 1,400 pieces of work.
Barney Smith previously had his collection on display in a San Antonio suburb. Now Truck Yard hopes to draw people from across the Metroplex who are curious to see the diverse pieces included in the assemblage.
“It’s the perfect conversation starter,” Max said. “You can look through and find your favorite. Plus, it’s where our reservations and private parties will be held.”
All this is just phase one for Truck Yard, with phase two – still underway – expanding their offerings. The same owners are also opening Beard Science, a sour house microbrewery, in an adjacent building. Phase two will also include a tiki bar, karaoke bar containers and a poker room for guests to enjoy.
The Colony location is currently operating under condensed hours from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. to work out the opening-week kinks. Regular hours will start on Saturday, July 20 and run from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Truck Yard will offer live music Thursdays through Sundays, which is a day more than the Dallas location.
As the bar continues to find its stride, locals can expect to see nearby food trucks become Truck Yard regulars on their schedule. But until then, there’s still plenty reason to join the party – and plenty of air-conditioned, indoor space there for these extra-hot summer days.
So come out, bring your pup and grab a cocktail with your group. Truck Yard is bound to be home to some quality day drinking and fun nights out year round.
