The story posed Plano as a contender for Ice Cream Capital of Texas, a product of Visit Plano's push for local business recognition.

Visit Plano was honored on Feb. 13 at the annual Adrian Awards Celebration for Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HMAI) in New York for “travel marketing excellence.”

According to a news release, the Adrian Awards are the largest and most prestigious competition in global travel marketing.

Visit Plano won a bronze award in the PR/communications online print feature category for the story featured in Texas Highways titled ‘Why Doesn’t Texas Have an Ice Cream Capital?’

The story pitches Plano as a contender in the running for a hypothetical Ice Cream Capital alongside Austin and Brenham.

“Plano is a strong candidate for the official ice cream capital of Texas due to its vibrant ice cream scene, its reputation as a culinary destination that embraces innovation, and its supportive local community,” says Nico Nguyen, co-owner of Milkytreats said in the article. “The city’s proximity to major cities and its potential to attract tourists further enhance its candidacy, plus Plano’s existing food-related events and festivals, as well as its potential for collaboration and innovation within the ice cream and food influencer community makes it an appealing choice for the title.”

The story demonstrates the lengths Visit Plano’s senior marketing manager, Millerann Moya goes to get news coverage for local businesses, a representative from Visit Plano said. Her own children are featured digging in at Local Creamery in the story (and pictured above.)

“The timing was perfect to shine a light on one of Plano’s lesser known but most delicious assets and position our city as the ‘capital of cool’ during a record heat wave,” said Visit Plano Executive Director Mark Thompson. “We are proud that our initiative garnered national, industry-wide recognition.”

The marketing team last won an Adrian Award in 2020 when Visit Plano brought home gold in digital marketing for the That’s Tempting campaign highlighting Plano’s dining scene and a silver award in PR feature placement online – consumer media for its entry Pooch Perfect: Plano Welcomes Visitors with Open Arms and Wagging Tales.

“The Adrian Award celebrate the innovation and ingenuity that fuel our success and recognize the marketing leaders whose extraordinary efforts literally ‘open the doors’ to exploration and excitement,” said Robert A. Gilbert, president and CEO of HSMAI. “Their work inspired the world to get out and create memories through travel, and HSMAI is proud to honor them.”
