This month, Plano Public Libraries are bringing on a bookmark contest, genealogy research, Google Suites workshop and more.

Design your own bookmark, use DNA to trace your family history and more with this month’s Top 5 Things To Do at your library.

From preschool to professional, Plano Public Library (PPL) has something for everyone. Not interested in reading? No biggie – PPL is #morethanbooks! Check out some of their upcoming events – in-person and virtual – for all your educating and entertaining needs:

  1. Enter your design to the Bookmark Contest (all ages)

The Friends of the Plano Public Library annual Bookmark Contest begins May 1! Download and entry form from the library’s website or pick up a printed form from any Plano Library. Entries are accepted through Thursday, June 15 at any Plano Library location, and winners are selected in five age categories. Winners will be announced in September at the library’s Community Art Night.

  1. Explore your ancestry through DNA (adults)

The Genealogy Friends of North Texas is meeting monthly at Haggard Library to discuss and explore the use of DNA in genealogy research. The first meeting is Tuesday, May 9 at 7 pm. Be sure to browse the Genealogy Center at Haggard Library to see the latest technology available, local and international genealogical records, and more.

  1. Use Google to boost your tech skills (ages 13 and up, registration required)

Plano Public Library is hosting a three-part virtual workshop on using Google Suite. Register for each class through the links below, or watch the recording afterward on the library’s YouTube channel.

  1. Learn how to build healthy relationships (teens grades 9-12)

This summer, Hope’s Door New Beginnings Center is presenting a four-part series on building healthy relationships for teens, “Expect Respect.” During these workshops, teens will learn how to recognize the difference between healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships, from friendships to dating; how to maintain safe relationships; and, help friends recognize red flags and avoid toxic relationships.

Expect Respect meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm at Haggard Library: May 30, June 6, June 13 and June 20.

  1. Have a playdate at the library (ages 0-3 with parent/caregiver)

Spend time together with your child, make new friends and talk one-on-one with child development specialists at our upcoming Family Place Playgroup. Raising children can spark lots of questions. What should you expect? Is that normal? Who can help? The Family Place Playgroup offers caregivers the chance to ask important questions from child development experts in our community one-on-one.

Registration opens at Harrington Library on May 15. The next playgroup session runs from June 1-29 at Harrington Library, meeting on Thursdays at 10 am.

If you do not already have a Plano Public Library card, be sure to register online here. All Plano Public Library locations are open to use computers, browse the collection, and attend in-person programs. Porch side pickup for holds is available, and you can always access eLibrary content online.
