Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, which distributes $3.4 million in scholarship to over 1,400 college students each year, has provided two scholarships this year to area students: the 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar to a Collin College student and the Coca-Cola Scholars Scholarship to a Plano West Senior High School student.

Yassin Mudawi, a student at Collin College‘s Plano campus, is a recipient of the 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar $1,000 scholarship.

“This scholarship is a unique opportunity for dedicated students, and I just couldn’t let it pass me by,” he said. “This validates that we should always aim high and shoot our shot at great possibilities. I’m glad I did because I received this amazing reward.”

The scholarship is given to 210 members of Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society for junior college students. According to a news release, nearly 1,500 applications were received.

“We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s global community leaders,” Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation President Jane Hale Hopkins said.

Mudawi, who is regularly on the college’s dean’s and president’s lists for honors and received the Member of the Year award for Collin College’s Student Government Association, plans to transfer to a four-year institution to double major in cognitive science and computer science, continue research and obtain a doctoral degree.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation also awarded Plano teen Alanna Polyak a $20,000 scholarship earlier this year. The scholarship is provided to 150 high schoolers each year.
Alanna Polyak is a Plano West Senior High School student who has pioneered research utilizing earthworms to both cure and prevent neurodegenerative conditions, in an affordable, accessible manner, with innovative techniques utilizing Neoblast cells, according to a Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation news release. Her work has been recognized by Regeneron ISEF, Regeneron STS, NJSHS and Rise for the World. Polyak has also worked with implementing safety measures for children who have been abused.
