MLK Breakfast honors students, increases HBCU partnerships

The breakfast contained speakers that emphasized mental health and the announcement of a partnership with an East Texas HBCU.

On January 18, more than 350 people attended the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Power Leadership Breakfast at Collin College Plano Campus.

On top of the scholarship ceremony, a certificate of recognition was presented by State Representatives Jeff Leach, Candy Noble, Mihaela Plesa and Matt Shaheen. A proclamation was also made from the City of Plano through City Council members Rick Horne and Anthony Ricciardelli.

Later, Collin College District President Neil Matkin announced a transfer partnership agreement with Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins. This adds to the college’s current list of such agreements with HBCU’s like Texas College, Texas Southern University and Wiley College.

Several students and community members were also honored, including:

  • Daniel Aghnomi – Dr. Myrtle Hightower Scholarship
  • Iteoluwakishipop Osinoiki-John – Pearls of Service Scholarship
  • Kalona Tucker – Plano North Metroplex Chapter of The Links, Inc. scholarship
  • Stefany Mogas Lopez – The Links scholarship
  • Sofia Hayashi – The Links scholarship
  • Gelacia Kelly – Plano Community Forum Legacy Scholarship
  • Tricia Ekukanju – The Powerful Journey Organization scholarship

Organized by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Power Leadership Breakfast Committee, the scholarship fund for the annual breakfast accepts donations year-round. Those looking to donate can contact the Collin College Foundation.
