What is Explore Plano?

Explore Plano is the City of Plano’s exclusive checklist of the coolest things going on across Plano during Summer ‘17. At each stop, there will be a photo challenge that leads to the opportunity to win prizes. Explore Plano runs June 1-August 31. At the Explore Plano website, all of the challenges are listed out by month, and most of the challenges are completely free!

This Week’s Featured #ExplorePlano Challenge:

Surf’s up, y’all. It’s time for one of the raddest #ExplorePlano challenges yet. Did you know that you can actually catch some righteous waves right here in Plano at Jack Carter Pool? This week, you get a shot at winning some prizes just by snapping pics while surfing in the city.

Jack Carter Pool, which was completed last summer, is the City of Plano’s summertime aquatic adventureland. With so many fun features, it’s actually more like a mini-water park than a city pool. BUT, since it’s owned and operated by the city, it costs less than a typical waterpark visit. For $5 per kid (ages 3-15) and $9 per adult (16+), you can treat yourself to a luxurious float down a 450-foot lazy river or a dive in the 12.5-foot deep pool, and you can even hang ten on the FlowRider surfing simulator.

For the kids, there’s a 250-foot water slide, basketball goals, sprinklers and sprayers, plus a shallow spot for tots. Just make sure to get there early, the pool is at or near the 1,000-person capacity almost every day. Sometimes the best way to beat the heat is to take a seat – and it helps if that seat is halfway underwater.

• The City of Plano will draw a winner (almost) every week, based on who uses the hashtag

• Jack Carter Pool recirculates 604,510 gallons of water every day through 11 high-pressure sand filters.
• The FlowRider works by sending a “sheet” of water out at 18,000 gallons per minute.
• The original Jack Carter pool existed from 1983 until 2014, when the site was closed and completely revamped to become the Jack Carter All-Abilities Park.

Keeping it Cool with Kelly Kessler:

Kelly Kessler has been the Aquatic Supervisor at Plano’s Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center for a little over a year, but she has been in and around the water her entire life. Responsible for overseeing the aquatic operations and programming for the center, Kelly’s role is to make sure its patrons are enjoying their visit in a clean and safe environment. She is originally from St. Louis, MO and loves kayaking, hiking and climbing.
