Pajamas, Pink Vanilla and Pretty People
Henry’s Homemade Ice Cream, a Plano institution since 1992, held its annual pajama party on Oct. 21. Henry’s award-winning ice cream is sold not only at its 3100 Independence Pkwy location, but in hotels, restaurants, pizzerias and other ice cream shops across several states. The beloved Plano business is known for both its generous support of the community and its catchy slogan, “Ice Cream Makes You Pretty.”
This was the 23rd year founder Henry Gentry hosted a pajama party to support the American Cancer Society. The event always entices hundreds of folks to wear their favorite pajamas – whether footie, rear trap-door or covered in cartoons – out to the ice cream shop in exchange for free ice cream.
This year, children and adults waited excitedly in line to be served by survivors of all ages and all types of cancer. This year’s honorary scooper was Ashley Morris-Johnson from Plano Metro Rotary, and special guest Lisa Sorentino, from Anderson’s Frozen Custard, came all the way from Buffalo, NY. Scoopers’ tips are donated at the end of the night to the American Cancer Society.
Judy Cordell of Judy Cordell Events is an 11-year breast cancer survivor and the coordinator of this event for the past 10 years. Judy explained, “While October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the pajama party doesn’t focus on a particular type of cancer. We take this special opportunity to celebrate all who have walked this difficult journey or have been touched by someone who has.”
This night is highly anticipated by Plano residents all year, not only for the free ice cream, but for the fun contests. Prizes were awarded for best slippers, best childrens’ pajamas, best couple’s pajamas and best pretty-in-pink pajamas. A group representing former Plano Chamber Small Business of the Year honorees served as this year’s judges.
Henry’s loves to create themed flavors, and of course this year’s pajama party had its own. Henry dreamed up Pink Vanilla in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but never fear, there were dozens of other signature flavors for folks to contemplate, like Cinnamon, Dino Egg or ML Dubay’s Toffee.
After the sweet evening ended with bellies full of ice cream and tip jars full of donations, Henry’s ice cream had once again lived up to its promise, and everyone was a little bit prettier, on the inside and out.
