Japan-America Society brings Otsukimi festival back to Plano

The Japan-America Society is aiming for their biggest Otsukimi festival yet, bringing the 27th year of the free festival to Haggard Park.

Downtown Plano will be the home of the Otsukimi Japanese Moon Viewing Festival next month, hosted by the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth.

The free festival celebrates the harvest moon, a tradition introduced to Japan by China during the Heian period, according to a press release.

This year’s Plano festival will feature taiko drumming, sumo wrestling demonstrations, live music, traditional dance and martial arts demonstrations, hands-on cultural activities, anime and Japanese pop culture experiences, children’s games and food.

The Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth, based in Plano, was originally founded in Dallas in 1970 before expanding across North Texas. Last year’s celebration brought an estimated 6,000 people to Haggard Park.

The Otsukimi Japanese Moon Viewing Festival will take place at Haggard Park, 901 E. 15th St., on Saturday, Sep. 26 from 6 to 10 p.m.
