Specials abound on National Tequila Day

Tequila lovers get ready.  Saturday, July 24 is National Tequila Day. That means great specials on the tasty beverage across the area.

While the story of tequila is well documented going back to the 1600s, National Tequila Day has a much murkier history.  In the United States, it has come to be celebrated each July 24, sharing the day with National Thermal Engineer Day, Nations Drive-Thru Day and National Cousins Day.  This year it will also be National Day of the Cowboy since the twenty-fourth falls on the fourth Saturday of the month. Of course none of those celebrations are likely to bring people flocking to the patios.

Now some margarita lovers out there may be thinking, “Didn’t we just celebrate National Tequila Day?”

The answer to that question is actually yes.  In 2018 the Mexican Senate considered a proposal to make the third Saturday of every March National Tequila day.  The authors of the bill thought it would be a good way to cement the spirit’s international reputation as a symbol of Mexico.

Of course these days one could argue that margaritas have become about as Texican as Mexican food. Regardless, Mexican senators approved the motion by a vote of 87 to 1, with one other senator abstaining.

Now that all may be fun quirky history, but the thing most people want to know is where they can get a cheap margarita. The good news is options are everywhere.

Meso Mayo will be serving $5 house margaritas all day to go along with its $5 guacamole and queso.

Not to be outdone, La Ventana will be offering $3.50 house margaritas all day as well as $3.50 cervezas.

El Fenix will also sell $3.50 house margaritas all day, along with $3 imports and $2 domestics. Village Burger Bar will also offer all-day margaritas for the same price.

Those looking for more than a regular margarita may want to try Twisted Root Burger Company, where they claim to make the “perfect margarita.” Perfection will only cost $5 on National Margarita Day.  Then there is Snuffer’s which will offer its “Snufferita” with olmeca altos reposado, El Presidente brandy, cointreau, orange and lime juice for only $4.

Plan ahead and enjoy National Margarita Day.  This holiday only comes around once a year…kind of
