Top 5 free things to do at your Plano Public Library this October

1. Shop with Eco-Friendly Habits

(adults, registration required)

Plano Public Library is teaming up with the Sustainability and Environmental Education Division to bring you Eco-Friendly Shopping on Tuesday, October 12 at 11 a.m. via Zoom. Find out how to improve your eco-friendly shopping habits, drastically reduce your carbon footprint, food waste, and decrease your grocery bill. Get a systematic guide to incorporate easy sustainability habits into your grocery shopping routine. Register here.

 

2. Meet Genealogy Enthusiasts

(adults, registration required)

It’s that time again: Genealogy Lock-In! On Friday, October 15 from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. you can learn from virtual webinars, work with staff to get past brick walls, and meet others working on their ancestry either at the library or virtually! You can attend in-person at the Genealogy Center (at Haggard Library) or attend from home. For those attending at home, email the Genealogy Center for registration. For in-person, registration begins at 9 a.m. and classes at 10 a.m. Topics include: beginning genealogy, DNA, family stories and using historical maps.

3. Build your own cosplay

(ages 11-18, ticketed)

The library’s Costuming/Cosplay Demo workshop is back in-person this fall! Come watch and learn how to make costume pieces using EVA Foam in this hands-on demonstration. You will learn about different techniques that come with building and designing your own costumes, and take home packets will be provided for attendees to continue at home. Costuming/Cosplay Demo meets on Saturday, October 16 at 2 p.m. at Parr Library. Tickets will be available in-person beginning at 1:30 p.m.

4. Make Pumpkin Pie – with Puppets!

(all ages)

It’s October, which means it’s time for Big Pumpkin! Witch grows a big pumpkin, and struggles to get it off the vine in time for Halloween. Can Ghost, Vampire, Mummy and Bat help? Costumes are encouraged. The Big Pumpkin puppet show is happening multiple times this month, so be sure to add it to your calendar:

5. Celebrate Diwali

(all ages, ticketed)

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a major holiday celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains around the world to mark the new beginnings and triumph of good. At Schimelpfenig Library, on Sunday, October 24 at 2 p.m., we are celebrating with stories and other hands-on activities. Tickets will be available in-person beginning at 1:30 p.m.
