Spanish conversation classes, genealogy workshops, business assistance, storytime, coding classes… for free?

From preschool to professional, Plano Public Library has something for everyone. Not interested in reading? No biggie – PPL is #morethanbooks! See what’s happening this month at the five public libraries near you:

1. Visualize your New Year goals

(ages 18+, ticketed)

During PPL’s January Cool Creations workshop at Schimelpfenig Library, they’re taking New Year’s resolutions to a artistic level: by making vision boards! At this goal-setting event, you’ll create a visualization of your 2020 dreams, meet new friends and get creative. Bring your goals, and they’ll supply the boards. This Vision Board Party meets on Tuesday, January 7 at 7 pm. Space is limited, so show up at 6:30 pm to get a ticket. Be sure to bring a friend!

2. Use technical skills to create art

(ages 13+, ticketed)

In the Digital Creation Space at Parr Library, you can utilize computers with graphic creating and editing software, digital drawing tools and more. For those looking to get started or learn new skills, PPL teaches free classes, too! During the Photoshop: Digital Drawing class on Monday, January 13 at 7 pm you will learn how to paint a digital masterpiece with drawing tablets and Photoshop.

3. Upcycle fabric using Boro art

(ages 0-100, ticketed)

The 18st AIRSpace series has evolved into Spotlight Art this season, with local artists teaching workshops across Plano. Each month PPL will host a demonstration and an art workshop so you can see the artist in action and then learn how to make the art yourself. First up: VET, an artist who incorporates environmental recycling into her artwork, is piecing together fabric using Boro textile with a variety of stitches. See VET demonstrate this art style on Saturday, January 18 from 2-5 pm at Harrington Library, and attend the workshop on Saturday, January 25 from 2-4 pm to learn how to do it yourself. All are welcome to see the demonstration, but the workshop has limited space. Show up at 1:30 pm on January 25 to get a ticket to the workshop.

Celebrate the Year of the Rat

4. Celebrate the Year of the Rat

(ages 0-100)

PPL’s Lunar New Year celebration is for the whole family, with a variety of activities to explore Lunar New Year traditions and cultures. Start your new year with lots of luck on Saturday, January 25 from 3-4 pm at Parr Library.

Hear author Lisa Gardner

5. Hear author Lisa Gardner

(ages 18+)

Author Lisa Gardner is coming back to Plano Public Library as the next Pop-Up Author! On Wednesday, January 29 at 7:30 pm, hear from Gardner about her latest novel “When You See Me” and stick around for an autograph at this free author talk. Copies will be available for purchase at the event.

Super-fans can meet and chat with Gardner at the Friends of the Plano Public Library sponsored reception beginning at 6:30 pm. Tickets include a copy of “When You See Me” and front-row seating at the author talk following the reception. Friends members and the general public can purchase tickets online.
