Plano Public Works & Engineering Earn Full APWA Accreditation

Plano was the first agency in Texas to earn the distinction in 2005. Over two decades later, the City earns reaccreditation for its training programs.

The City of Plano’s Public Works and Engineering departments have earned full accreditation from the American Public Works Association for the sixth consecutive time.

Plano first received APWA accreditation in 2005, becoming the first agency in Texas to earn the distinction. At the time, only 18 other agencies in the United States and Canada were accredited. Today, more than 225 agencies are accredited, including 22 in Texas.

The accreditation process evaluates hundreds of nationally recognized management practices across public works and engineering operations. During this year’s review, Plano achieved full compliance with every applicable practice evaluated by the accreditation team.

Although the review primarily focuses on Public Works and Engineering, the process also involved several other city departments, including Human Resources, Technology Solutions, Communication & Community Outreach, Emergency Management, Planning and Environmental Health & Sustainability.

Evaluators also identified two Plano programs as model practices that can serve as examples for other agencies nationwide. The City’s New Supervisor Training & Onboarding Program was recognized for its approach to preparing new supervisors, while Plano’s Development Handbook and Civil Plans Checklist was recognized for interdepartmental coordination, technical quality management and consistent infrastructure design.

The reaccreditation award will be presented during the Plano City Council meeting on Monday, Aug. 24.
