Applications are open now for the Spring 2024 Citizen’s Government Academy, which accepts 40 participants each year to learn more about the different departments that make our city run.
Classes will meet on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m., except the final class on Monday, April 8, where dinner will be provided with council recognition for graduation from the program.

Applications require general information on the applicant, questions about current involvement in the community and confirmation that the applicant will be able to attend all classes. Class members cannot miss more than two classes in order to graduate. Applications are open now and due on Jan. 30.
The City of Plano also offers a Citizens Police Academy and Citizens Fire Academy.
The Citizens Police Academy, which aims to educate the residents of Plano on the operations of the department through a series of lectures and hands-on activities on Thursday evenings from 7-10 p.m. for 12 weeks. The academy is led by the Crime Prevention Unit officers at the Plano-Richardson Police Training Center.

- Crimes against persons investigations
- Department philosophy
- Emergency response team operations
- Firearm safety
- Internal affairs
- K-9 policing
- Narcotics enforcement
- Neighborhood policing
- Recruiting, ethics and training
- Tactical driving
- Tactical situation response
- Traffic and patrol
Enrollment in this program is held twice each year. Applications for the Spring 2024 term open tomorrow, Dec. 15.
The Citizens Fire Academy is designed for adults to learn more about how Plano Fire-Rescue is organized and operates. The eight-week course meets one night per week to go over a variety of topics and operations within the department. Information on specific applications and schedules for this academy are not yet available.
