13th Annual Head for the Cure 5K scheduled for May 6

This year's Head for the Cure 5k is set for May 6. The race will start at Red Tail Pavilion. Funds raised will benefit brain cancer research.

The Head for the Cure Foundation, a nonprofit that raises funds for brain cancer research, is only a month away from its annual 5k fundraiser.

The fundraiser will benefit UT Southwestern, Grey Matters Support Group of North Texas and other national brain cancer programs and initiatives. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 24,810 malignant tumors of the brain or spinal cord will be diagnosed this year.

This year’s goal is to raise $155,000, with $43,445 raised as of April 9 at 12:00 p.m.

“Each year, over 84,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor,” the fundraising website said. “More than 120 types of brain tumors exist, making effective treatment complicated. Cutting edge research is needed as we continue to make strides in this fight.”

The 5k will take place at Red Tail Pavilion. Packets can be picked up early on May 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Frisco Running Company.

Packets can be picket up day-of at 7, followed by the 5k at 8, survivor and caregiver recognitions at 9:30 and event awards at 9:45 a.m.

Awards will be given in Fundraising, Top Fundraising Team, Top Fundraising Individual, Largest Team, Female Overall, Male Overall, Non-Binary Overall, Female Masters, Male Masters, Non-Binary Masters, and first, second and third in age groups.
