Liberty Recreation Center patrons will get an early gift this holiday season when the center reopens after being closed for extensive renovations.
The grand opening celebration will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. Guests will be treated to snacks, commemorative items, tours and a visit from local dignitaries. Staff will also be on site to assist with membership purchases and answer any questions about the center’s fall programming.
Plano voters approved $2.5 million for renovations in the 2013 bond election, which include:
· Updated locker rooms and restrooms
· An enhanced and expanded fitness area
· A new outdoor fitness area
· Pool area improvements
· A general refresh of the entire recreation center and grounds
Liberty has a rich history in our community. Built in the 1970s as a YMCA, it was later converted to a Jewish Community Center. The City of Plano eventually bought the property and opened it as Liberty Recreation Center in 2004. “Its centralized location and proximity to schools and homes make it a popular place for people of all ages to get fit and make friends,” said Supervisor Kristie Bell. The center is known for its annual Liberty Block Party, a popular event that brings the Plano community together for a day of free food, fitness demos and fun.
“We’ve always been known as the hidden gem of all of our recreation centers, and we take great pride in the sense of community we bring to this sector of Plano,” said Bell. “People are going to be blown away by our new makeover. The additions and enhancements we have been able to give to the facility are just what our staff needs in order to continue to serve our patrons with the level of excellence they expect and deserve.”
