Plano city government recognized for zoning alert tool

The Center for Digital Government has awarded the City of Plano a City Government Experience Award in recognition of its zoning alert tool and response map.  The honor was announced on Sept. 15 as part of the Center’s sixth annual government experience awards.

The awards recognize the achievements and best practices of government entities that are improving the experience of government services. A total of thirty-seven Government Experience Project Awards were presented in categories for city, county, state and federal government.

Plano’s zoning alert tool allows residents that sign up to receive an email alert when a zoning change is requested. Those emails include a brief description of the requested change, case number, location, staff contact information and important meeting dates.

The alert system is similar to how the city communicates weather alerts. When signing up, residents can request to only receive alerts for cases near them.

An interactive response map allows them to submit comments on zoning cases. The feedback is given to the Planning and Zoning Commission and becomes part of the permanent record. City officials say that these improvements make information on zoning change requests more accessible and transparent to the public.
