Meghann Sciples, a special education teacher at Mathews Elementary, and Mitch Stobee, social studies and PACE teacher at Robinson Middle, were honored as the PISD Teachers of the Year.

Sciples and Stobee were announced as the PISD Elementary Teachers of the Year at the 2024 Teacher of the Year Gala, which honors the 74 teacher of the year campus nominees from every school. From the campus nominees, 10 teachers were named as finalists and named the 2024 Marilyn Brooks Excellence in Teaching Award Winners. Among these 10 teachers, Sciples and Stobee were one of five teachers selected for the Marilyn Brooks Excellence in Teaching Award in the Elementary and Secondary category.

Sciples attended Texas A&M University and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, concentrating in special education. She joined the team at Mathews in 2014 and has been teaching ever since. At first, Sciples never planned on becoming a teacher. Initially interested in speech pathology, Sciples joined Texas A&M’s special education program as the school did not have a fast-track program from an undergraduate to a graduate degree. Inspired by family members with special needs, Sciples aims to challenge and empower her students, she told the Plano Star Courier

“We’ve always known what an amazing educator [Sciples] is, but now all of Plano and PISD celebrate her as well,” said Mathews Elementary in a Facebook post. “Her commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment is setting a precedent for educators throughout the district.”

A native Planoite himself and proud Plano Senior graduate, Stobee initially pursued a Bachelor of Science in Management and minored in Spanish at the University of Arkansas. After working at different companies, he followed his passion for teaching through an alternative certification program, certifying him in social studies, grades 4th-8th. After being a substitute teacher for six months, Stobee was offered a job at Robinson and never looked back. Through his teaching, Stobee enjoys helping his students realize their full potential, he told the Plano Star Courier

“Loved and appreciated by all, [Stobee’s] infectious personality and exceptional teaching style have left an indelible mark on our school community,” said Robinson Middle in a Facebook post. “From students who adore his engaging lessons to fellow teachers who value his unwavering support, Mr. Stobee embodies the spirit of excellence in education.”
