This past December DFW artist Milan Bender installed Echowave, the third and final large-scale art piece in the Downtown Plano Arts District as part of the Downtown Mural Project. Bender’s artwork is a 3-D installation located on the Southeast corner of K Avenue and 15th Street.
The Historic Downtown Plano Association launched the Downtown Mural Project in 2017 in partnership with Plano Art Association. Made possible by a grant from the Plano Heritage Commission, the goal of the project was to create three large-scale art pieces to celebrate the city’s history.
“We are thrilled with how each artist and mural have showcased Plano’s history in a unique way, and we are so thankful to Soheyla Rashidyan and Mike Korman who have helped shaped the project,” said Gene Dillard, President of the Plano Art Association.
The Echowave art installation by Bender features four metal representations of sound waves, artfully placed between colorful letters that spell out Plano. Each one of the four sections of sound waves has a corresponding online audio segment that gives a peek into Plano’s history: Plano’s name and origins, the founding of the fire department, Plano’s business and commerce and our railroad heritage. The audio segments are narrated by Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere, Plano Fire Chief Sam Greif, Plano Chamber of Commerce CEO Jamee Jolly, and Interurban Railway Museum Curator Robert Haynes.
