The Haggard Library lobby is about to be transformed into a bargain bookstore. From Aug. 21-29, visitors will be able to purchase thousands of used books for all ages and interests. Those books will be sold by the bag at the incredibly low price of $10 per bag.
But wait, there’s more. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Plano Library organization, which supports all five Plano libraries. Since 1965, it has gifted more than $1 million to help pay for things like special programs, new technology and thousands of books.
All transactions must be made in cash with exact change. Checks and credit cards will not be accepted.
Earlier this summer, COVID-19 prompted the cancellation of the annual Friends of the Plano Library book sale for the second consecutive year. This large fundraiser typically raises money for special library projects and purchases. However, reserving a pricey venue several months in advance during uncertain times was a dicey proposition. Also, many of the organization’s volunteers are retirees vulnerable to the virus who simply couldn’t risk the exposure. Therefore, the difficult decision to cancel again was made.
While the lobby book sale may not be able to raise money on quite the same scale as the larger sale, all proceeds will still go to a good cause. As for the buyers, those bags o’ books just might be hiding their new favorite read.
