The India Association of North Texas in Plano presented the Woman of the Year Award for 2023 to Geeta Menon, founder of One Earth One Chance this month.
The India Association of North Texas (IANT) is a nonprofit that aims to serve the cultural and educational needs of the North Texas Indian community. IANT celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8 at Minerva Banquet Hall in Plano.
The event included 11 women sharing their success stories, followed by keynote speaker Preetha Prabhakar and a dance performance by Naari Shakti. Speakers were chosen based on service to the community and were awarded by the IANT Board Members with trophies at the end of the program, according to NRI2NRI.
Geeta Menon was chosen as Woman of the Year due to her work with One Earth One Chance. OEOC is an environmental nonprofit that focuses on sustainable living and reforestation of urban areas. In DFW, OEOC has planted 760 trees and shrubs with irrigation, arranged litter pick up by youth in parks, ran clothing drives and raised awareness about sustainable living, according to The Times of India.
OEOC is hosting a tree planting this weekend in Dallas, where volunteers (under the guidance of arborists) will be planting 50 trees in Lochwood Park. Later, on April 15, the group will plant 50 trees in RP Brooks Park. The group planted 450 tree saplings and shrubs in Buckhorn Park earlier this year as part of the Habitat Restoration program jointly with the City of Plano, John Paul II High School and the Texas Conservation Alliance.
“Volunteering with us is a fun-filled, dirt-covered, time outside enriching soil and lives,” One Earth One Chance said in a Facebook post.
