Live Well in North Texas: Courtney Echols

With so many demands put on ourselves daily, the idea of self-care can feel impossible to schedule. For Courtney Echols, engagement manager at My Possibilities, her most non-negotiable path to self-care is exercise. Not only does she teach at CycleBar and The Barre Code in Plano, she also takes the classes. But if taking a class doesn’t work into her schedule, she gets moving anyway.

“I lace up a pair of shoes and hit my neighborhood streets,” she said. “I prefer to work out in the morning because there are few scheduling conflicts at 5:30 a.m. It also helps me prioritize myself before my day has even started.”

And if Courtney can make time for herself, we all can. With a career, being a wife and a mother of two under age seven, and juggling her social and spiritual life at church, she has a full plate.

Other ways she takes care of herself range from weekly stretch and cryotherapy sessions, monthly massages and facials, and writing handwritten cards that she mails to friends both near and far. There is also another non-negotiable – a salt bath just about every night after she and her husband put the kids to bed; she tries not to bring her phone.

Courtney said the key to keeping up with self-care is to surround yourself with supporters. She said when she thinks about her perpetual journey to true balance, the road is lined with a great team of cheerleaders: her husband, Aaron; her boss, team and the HIPsters at My Possibilities; her professional mentor; and her clients and staff at CycleBar and The Barre Code.

“The days of running yourself into the ground to prove that you are a hard worker or are a real-life superhero are over, in my opinion. But it’s not easy; that’s why it is a discipline,” she said. “You have to practice it daily. You have to get comfortable with saying ‘no’ sometimes. You have to find the joy in missing out.”
