Plano Animal Shelter aims to clear the shelters with a month-long event with reduced or eliminated adoption fees.

Plano Animal Shelter is hosting its 9th annual Clear the Shelters event from August 1-27, where adoption fees are reduced or waived in an effort to reduce the number of animals in the shelter.

For the first part of the event, August 1-21, adoption fees will be half-priced before becoming fully waived for the second half, August 22-27.

Adoptable pets can be viewed online prior to coming to the shelter. All adoptable pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Adopters will also be provided with a free collar and an activatable free month of pet insurance.

To adopt a furry friend, potential adopters must be Plano residents that can provide a valid form of government-issued photo ID and $10 to register the pet with the city of Plano. Renters must also bring a copy of their lease agreement or a letter from their landlord showing that animals are allowed and a list of any prohibited breeds.

The event is part of a larger national event of the same name hosted by NBCUniversal Local, which boasts 862,187 animals adopted as part of the event since 2015.

The shelter suggests making sure that current pets have up-to-date vaccinations, fences are repaired to prevent accidental escapes, researching information about bringing a new pet into the household and leaving current pets at home before adopting.

Plano Animal Shelter is located at 4208 West Plano Parkway and is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
