Nearly 6,000 kids, teens and adults came out for the second annual Plano Families First Fall Fair on Sept. 28 to receive free school supplies; health, vision and dental screenings; flu shots and much more. Free and open to families who reside in Plano or attend Plano schools, the fair – held at the Plano Event Center – offered a plethora of free services and takeaways with fun and entertainment to appease the whole family. Mayor Harry LaRosiliere, who founded the event to strengthen Plano families, was on hand along with Plano ISD Superintendent Sara Bonser and key sponsors.

And the numbers said it all. Approximately 350 people received flu shots administered by Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Plano, along with 338 health screenings (including glucose, BMI and blood pressure) and 517 vision screenings (for children and adults) offered by Walmart. Approximately 110 children received asthma straw screenings provided by the Children’s Health and Andrews Institute, and Collin County School of Dental Hygiene conducted dental screenings for family members and fluoride varnishes for children. New this year, children received orthodontic screenings thanks to Nonprofit Smiles Change Lives (who also offered orthodontia at dramatically reduced fees to qualifying families).

The first 500 kids received free school supplies packets provided by Liberty Mutual and BSBD Insurance. And 1,000 families received a free jar of peanut butter collected during the Collin County Peanut Butter Drive, led by Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and the Plano City Council in partnership with the North Texas Food Bank.

Job seekers got to meet dozens of employers offering hundreds of full-time, part-time and seasonal positions at a Job Fair hosted by the Plano Chamber of Commerce. As an added bonus, Capital One and Collin College were on hand at their Career Corner offering advice on how to create a resume and developing a LinkedIn profile, conducting mock interviews, and offering free LinkedIn photos shot by a professional photographer. Bank of America had a host of employees on hand ready to hire dozens of people for their team.

The Plano Public Library hosted puppet shows and gave away 500 books to children. Children’s Health and Andrews Institute offered GoNoodle activities and information on asthma management and sports medicine. Plano Parks & Recreation gave away free rec center memberships and led soccer skills camps and dance and martial arts demos. And The Boeing Company was a hot spot for kids who learned about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) thanks to a popular stomp rockets activity. (More than 600 stomp rockets launched!)

Other entertainment highlights included a free Pumpkin Patch Photo Booth provided by the Junior League of Collin County along with puppet shows, kids craft areas and face painting. The popular children’s music group, The Que Pastas, provided entertainment along with the silly-science Bubble Lady, the Dallas Mavericks ManiAACs and Mavs Man.

Big thanks go to the Plano Families First Fall Fair sponsors including Bank of America, Children’s Health, The Boeing Company, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center of Plano, Liberty Mutual and BSBD Insurance, Capital One, Collin College, Medical City Plano, North Texas Food Bank, Smiles Save Lives, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, TXU Energy, Dallas Mavericks, Junior League of Collin County, City of Plano and media partners Fox 4 and Fox 4 More.
